January week

Language and literature The new term began with establishing certain essential agreements. We began the new unit, The King’s Speech, with an introduction to media analysis. We analysed three different types of posters by determining the rhetorical triangle for each and identifying how the linguistic and visual elements lend to their effectiveness.

We are currently participating in a class activity where we have identified strengths of each of our classmates by using adjectives. Once each of us received this list of ‘validation’, we entered these descriptions into the Johari window and shared how we felt about some of those. Next, we identified one aspect of our personality that hinders us from maximising our potential. We are in the process of creating a plan of action to overcome this by using an external agency and documenting our progress in our journals.

Math This week in math we started off with our geometry unit. We started by forming the idea of what surface area is. We created a net of a rectangular prism or a cuboid and then used this net to make a solid cuboid. Thereafter, we calculated its surface area using those measurements. We participated in this activity to learn to analyse surface area through nets. Next, we worked out multiple math problems of various types of prisms based on surface area using their nets.

Biology

Biology lesson is the lesson which everyone looks up to as it is a lesson which not only gives us knowledge but also the enjoyment due to the way it is delivered.  We presented our first formative assessment in groups by making collages from newspaper articles and creating criteria-based questions using command terms. We discussed our homework sheets and respiratory and digestive disorders.

We have now started exploring a new topic – the endocrine system, to learn how the various hormones produced by different glands play a major role in our development.

Individuals & societies In the last 2 weeks, we presented the stories we made in our groups of the tribe. We learnt about political cartoons and saw a video which taught us how to analyze them. For better understanding, we were paired up with our peers and asked to make a political cartoon of our own which had to talk about either colonialism or imperialism. Then we switched cartoons and filled an evaluation sheet to get the cartoons assessed on criteria A, C and D. We are now presenting the political cartoons in the class.

Last week, we completed Criterion A of the design cycle. We conducted a peer assessment of presentations on the basis of the questions given to us on an evaluation sheet. By this activity we were able to improve our work according to the feedback given, before we could submit our presentations for assessment.  We also started the strand 1 of Criterion B. This week, we completed strand 1 of Criterion B and began designing our home page using Wireframe, a new tool introduced to us. This helped us visualize our design and justify the design specifications we gave in Strand 1 of Criterion B.
